WHO records that every year nearly 41% of all under-five child deaths are among newborn infants, babies in their first 28 days of life or the neonatal period. Virtually all (99%) newborn deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. It is especially in Africa and South Asia that the least progress in reducing neonatal deaths has been made.

Here are 15 ways to prevent the death of new born babies:

  1. CHOICE OF ANTENATAL: the hospital whether private, teaching or general hospital you pick for the antenatal is very important. The quality of staff, their track record as far as delivery and general health is concerned and how close the hospital is to your house must be carefully considered.
  2. AVOID DRUG ABUSE: it will be detrimental to your health if during pregnancy you use just any drug that is not recommended by your Doctor. Drug abuse is taking drug when it is not prescribed, not following prescription or abruptly stopping the use of drug when you feel you are okay. All these practices can affect the normal growth of your baby or can even lead to the death of the baby.
  3. ASK QUESTIONS AS AT WHEN DUE: don’t think you know everything or be shy to approach the doctor for anything that is of concern to you as far as your health and that of the baby is concerned.
  4. KEEP UP WITH APPOINTMENTS: whenever you have an appointment with your Doctor, please don’t miss it. Even when you are okay and you know the growth of the baby is normal, still go for your appointment
  5. ADEQUATE INTAKE OF WATER: this is one of the best ways you can keep your baby healthy even right inside of you and it doesn’t cost you much to do this. Remember, water is life
  6. CUBBING THE RISK OF OLD AGE PREGNANCY: as women grow older, the risk of having a stillborn baby increases. The risk for older mums appears to be highest at around 41 weeks, so constant visitation to the hospital is critical at this stage in order to rule out any abnormality.
  7. CHILD SPACING: for the health of the child, women should wait until their last child is at least 2 years before getting pregnant. It is believe that the body would have been well prepared so as to carry the pregnancy to term.
  8. USE YOUR DRUGS: don’t skip drugs, take them as prescribed by the Doctor. It will help in the normal growth and general body functioning of your baby.
  9. EXERCISE: it has been shown that regular body exercise goes a long way in keeping the baby away from danger but care must be taken while exercising and you must get approval from your Doctor to know which exercise is best for you and at what stage you should start.
  10. GOOD DIET: there is no replacement for healthy meals, as much as you keep up with other routines; you must also eat quality foods. Take fruits and vegetables too
  11. NEVER PATRONIZE QUARK OR NATIVES DOCTORS: it will be a big medical error if you patronize quark/native Doctors, there is no justifiable reason for that; not even financial problem. It will be better to look for the hospital you can afford.
  12. GO TO THE CLINIC WHEN IN LABOUR: once the feeling starts and you know you are in labour, quickly go to the hospital. Don’t wait another minute.
  13. MONITOR YOUR EDD: you must keep your expected date of delivery in mind so that when you’re getting overdue, you will be able to take the right step.
  14. PRAY AGAINST MEDICAL ERROR: it is very important to pray against medical errors on the part of the medical practitioners that will be available during delivery. A lot of women have lost their babies to this, so, pray before the day of delivery and pray during delivery
  15. TALK TO ELDERLY WOMEN: you can only be a professional in what you have gone through or learnt through reading, have elderly women of like mind around who you can go to and will be able to lead you aright. Truth is, it is not all cases that require you visiting the clinic, these women can be of help.
