16 dead as train collides with passenger bus in Russia

About 16 people have been reported dead after a train collided with a bus on a crossing in the Russian region of Vladimir, 100km (62 miles) east of Moscow.

According to Russian media report, the cause of the accident may have been that the bus engine stalled after the driver ignored a red warning signal.

Authorities said the driver who drove the bus from Uzbekistan had tried to get the 55 passengers from to leave the bus.

The Russian Tass news agency also reported that some passengers who escaped attempted to move the bus before it collided with the train.

Meanwhile all those reported dead were passengers on the bus as no train passengers were injured in the incident

The regional health authorities originally said 19 people died but the Russian Investigative Committee this Friday morning, the 6th of October revised the number of dead down to 16.

A spokesperson said:  “Other passengers, including minors, have been taken to hospital with various injuries.” It was said that an inquiry has been opened and the number of dead and injured was still being assessed.
