17 Things to Take Note of When Having Sex During Your Menstruation
By Dosu Ann
Just because you’re having your period doesn’t mean you have to forego sex. For some married women, sexual activity during menstruation can be even more pleasurable than at other times of the month.
Arousal is different for every woman and some may be too distracted by their period and its annoyances to actually get in the mood for sex. But for others, menstruation could actually be a turn-on of sorts.
That is because your estrogen and testosterone are low on day 1 but they start to rise by day 3. According to Ford, some women feel more aroused and more sensitive during this time.
Also, your flow can serve as extra lubrication during sex which can also increase pleasure. If you typically use a store-bought lubricant to help with dryness during sex, this may be your week to go natural. And some research suggests that orgasms can even relieve menstrual cramping and PMS. Women shouldn’t assume their partner we will be grossed out by their period.
According to Ford, it is the person who is menstruating who puts a stop to sex, not her other half. He also says that every couple is different and some people will be more open to it than others. But before having sex, make sure you understand the risks of STIs, other infections, and pregnancy — even during your period.
1.The risk of infection when having sex during menstruation.
It’s crucial to practice safe sex while you’re having your period because you could still get or transmit an STI, like HIV, during this time. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus may be present in the menstrual blood. Therefore, doctors strongly encourage using a condom to decrease this risk.
2. The Risk of Pregnancy During Your Period.
Having sex when you’re menstruating will most likely not result in getting pregnant because you’re usually several days away from ovulating during menstruation. But there are exceptions. If you have a shorter menstrual cycle (21 to 24 days) and you have sex toward the end of your period, sperm can remain viable in your vagina for up to five days, so pregnancy is possible. But this is not an optimal time to try to get pregnant if you’re hoping for a baby.
3.You may experience sexual arousal during your period.
You may feel more sexually aroused and sensitive during this time of the month because of the changes in your hormone levels. According to Hall, many women experience an increased feeling of congestion in the pelvic area, which can also ramp up their sex drive. But for some women, this extra sensitivity may make it uncomfortable to have sex during this time. The bottom line is to make sure that both you and your partner are comfortable with the situation.
4. You can minimize the mess.
Wearing a menstrual cup or a female condom can help reduce the amount of blood that might come out during intercourse. According to Ford, if you are not comfortable using one of them, even a regular condom can make cleanup easier—for your partner, at least. Having sex in the missionary position, with the woman on her back, can also limit blood flow. You can also have sex toward the end of your period when your flow is lighter.
5. You have got options
If you are not into intercourse during your period, there is no reason you can’t still enjoy other sexual encounters (mess free!). “She can wear a tampon and the focus can be on the clitoris,” says Ford and she can still help her partner orgasm.
6. Nothing bad will happen if it gets on a guy’s penis. It’s not a toxic substance, It’s uterine lining and blood. It’s really not a big deal if it goes on a penis. He can just wipe it off.
7.Menstrual periods are not ‘gross’ or ‘dirty.’
They’re just natural. They happen every month. They’re just part of women’s bodies and it is nothing to be ashamed of.
8. Having orgasm during menstruation can alleviate cramps.
Orgasms are natural pain-relievers. They are magical. They’re also a lot more fun than taking a paracetamol.
9.There won’t be a need for lubricant.
You won’t need lube. Period blood is a natural lubricant.
10. A lot of people are doing it.
People hardly ever talk about having hot, amazing period sex. But trust us, loads of people are doing it and enjoying it. But if shame and embarrassment is the only thing holding you back, take this as your permission to go forth and get sensual everyone’s doing it, it’s okay, and there’s really nothing to be ashamed of.
11. It can actually shorten your period.
All the contracting your uterus gets up to when you’re having an orgasm makes lining and blood come out faster, meaning that frequent sex sessions can reduce the length of your period by a day or two.
12. It’s rarely as messy as you think.
Unless you have extremely heavy periods, you’re very unlikely to end up in the pool of blood-stained sheets you’re imagining in your mind. The average amount of blood released during menstruation is between 30 and 40ml. That’s over the course of a few days. So, imagine how little blood is actually being released per minute. Then consider how long your sex session is actually going to last.
13. You can take it to the shower.
If you are really concerned about stains, then remember that you and your spouse can always hop in the shower.
14. It is safer.
It is normal to be concerned about your health during this time and you may even wonder about your partner coming into contact with menstrual blood. But as noted in Health, sex during your period is safe
15. Introduce the missionary style.
Lie on your back to lessen the flow of blood while you are having intercourse.
Also, be careful about deep penetration because your cervix may be lower and more sensitive during your period. If anything starts to hurt, just tell your spouse and proceed with care.
16. Look out for your lighter days.
This just makes sense. If you know that days 3-5 are lighter than days 1 and 2, just keep your panties on for those 48 hours. If it doesn’t bother your spouse and they are totally down to day 1 sex, evaluate your concerns. Maybe it is something you could get over.
17.Communicate with your spouse.
Not everybody enjoys period sex, so it is best not to initiate sex during your period and deliver an awkward surprise to your spouse and a potentially frustrating response to you. Talk to your partner about it and find out what your spouse thinks about the situation before you get started.
Some religions and cultures consider the act of having intercourse during your period to be wrong. While no scientific principles support this restriction, you get to respect your spouse’s feelings on the matter.
