23-Year-Old student gets jail sentence for stealing wristwatch

A 23-year old student, Abdulrazak Yahaya has been sent to jail by a Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, on Friday, September 29th, 2017 for stealing a Piaget wristwatch worth N 100,000.

Yahaya who hails from Maraba in Nasarawa state was sentenced to seven months imprisonment after being found guilty of the two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and theft.

The Presiding Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, found the convict guilty and gave the jail sentence. However, the convict who pleaded guilty and begged for mercy was given an option of N 17, 000 fine.

The wristwatch was ordered by the Magistrate to be returned back to the complainant.

The Prosecutor, Mr Mahmud Ismail’a, had earlier told the court that the complainant, Alamin Garba of Karu reported the case at the Karu police station on September 27th that the wristwatch went missing after the defendant left his house.

According to the Prosecutor, Garba claimed that he accommodated the defendant in his apartment and he attended a birthday party all night but could not find the wristwatch when the defendant left his house the following morning.

The prosecutor said after the complainant had been made at the station, the defendant was arrested at his residence and the stolen wristwatch was found in his possession.

He mentioned that the recovered wristwatch was in police custody and that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 287 of the Penal code.
