30 DIES AS MAN U WINS
Not less than 30 people were feared dead yesterday at a viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River State. The sad incident occurred during the Manchester United versus Anderlecht of Belgium Europa League Quater-finals which Man u Eventually won.
The death at the viewing center was as a result of a high-tension cable that fell on the roof of the viewing center and electrocuted 30 viewers.
A viewer who escaped the tragedy by a breath of air told Punch correspondent that a transformer near the viewing centre located in the Iyang-Esu area of the Calabar Municipal Local Government Area exploded during the match and this allowed a high-tension cable to fall on the viewing centre.
The survivor who was sober said, “It happened during the match between Manchester United and Anderlecht. I heard a deafening bang. I rushed out to see what was happening. When I turned back to go inside the viewing centre, I saw a cable coming down on the centre and this electrocuted the viewers in the hall.’
The Police Public Relations Officer, Cross River State Command, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident.
She said the number of casualties would be known today (Friday)
