35 percent of Ibadan residents are hypertensive
35 per cent of people reside in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital is suffering from hypertension according to The Chief Medical Director (CMD), University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Professor Temitope Alonge.
Professor Alonge disclosed this while featuring on Fresh FM live radio programme.
This discovery was revealed after a project initiated by the hospital, during which its workers test residents in their homes and offices.
According to Alonge, the tests showed that about 35 per cent of residents lived with hypertension, with most of them unaware.
He further explained that there is need for Nigerians to take their health serious by embracing preventive measures to reduce sudden deaths.
“The commonest cause of deaths in adult population since 2004 is stroke due to hypertension. From our tests, about 35 per cent of Ibadan residents are hypertensive,” he said.
Professor Alonge, urged governments in the South-Western states to support the hospital because the patients came mostly from the states.
Alonge said that the hospital had concluded plans to manufacture fluids and some basic drugs in its efforts to reduce negative impact of poor funding.
He said production would begin within the next six months and the project would be executed base on (PPP).
