Over 200 female students of Government Secondary Boarding School, Chibok, Borno State, were kidnapped on 14th April 2014 and about 110 girls were kidnapped from Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State, on February 27, 2018.

Looking into these two major kidnaps, there are similarities that can be noticed and they are:

  1. Both schools where the kidnap was carried out by Boko Haram are Girls Only Government Secondary schools.

2. Both kidnaps were carried out by the Boko Haram Terrorists Group.

3. Both schools where the girls were kidnapped are located in Borno and Yobe State which are the North-Eastern States of Nigeria.

4. Both School Girls kidnap occurred about a year to the general elections. Chibok girls were kidnapped in 2014 which is a year to the General Elections in 2015 and the Dapchi girls were also kidnapped this year 2018, a year to the General Elections in 2019.

5. The name of both areas where the kidnap was done looks similar; check this: Chi-bok, Dap-Chi. Perhaps Boko Haram love something about the word, “Chi,” in the name of the two towns.

6. Both School girls kidnap led to great protest all over the world even though the one at Dapchi is recent. Chibok school girls kidnap led to the popular #BringBackOurGirls campaign and Hajia Aisha Buhari started the #LeaveOurGirlsAlone campaign for the Dapchi School girls kidnap.

7. Both kidnaps caught the Federal Government of Nigeria unaware. The Jonathan-led administration in 2014 struggled to accept the kidnap of the Chibok girls. In 2018 too, the Buhari-led administration also struggled to accept the kidnap of the Dapchi girls. In fact, both administrations were pressured to accept the sad reality of the kidnap.

Despite the fact that some of the Chibok girls have been rescued alive and brought back home, many of them are still being kept hostage by Boko Haram and their future is uncertain. With the recent kidnap in Dapchi, there is one question that keeps lingering in the mind, “are girls really safe in Nigeria, especially in the North East?”
