Nobel laureate and highly lettered Professor Wole Soyinka celebrates his 83rd birthday today. He was born on July 13, 1934, into the Remo, Isara-Remo family in this present day Abeokuta, Ogun state Nigeria. Wole Soyinka is the second born of six children, all sons of Samuel Ayodele Soyinka and Grace Eniola Soyinka his parents.

 

Over the eight decades and three years of his existence, the name ‘Wole Soyinka’ has grown into great prominence and has become a notable name amongst academics all around the world and not just Africa alone.

 

But then some things might still be hidden to you about the Wole Soyinka’s family.

  1.    Wole Soyinka has five children from his loins which consist of three daughters and two sons; the daughters are; Peyibomi Soyinka Airewele, Moremi Soyinka Onijala, Iyatade Apampa, and sons; Olaokun Soyinka, Makin Soyinka. With Olaokun as the first born of the notable Professor.

 

  1.    Wole Soyinka was first married in his life to British multicultural educationist, Late Barbara Dixon in 1958. Barbara Dixon is the mother of Olaokun Soyinka (Wole Soyinka’s – first born and son). His second marriage was in 1963 to Nigerian librarian, Olaide Idowu and the third, in the year 1989 with Folake Doherty.

  1.    Wole Soyinka has a traceable genealogy to the Ransome Kuti, he is a cousin to late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti

 

  1.    Wole Soyinka’s mother (Grace Eniola Soyinka) was one of the most prominent members of the influential Ransom Kuti family. She was the daughter of Rev Canon J.J Ransom Kuti a sister to Olusegun Azariah Ransome-Kuti, Oludotun Ransome-Kuti and sister-in-law to Funmilayo Ransom Kuti.
