According to a general saying, the eyes is the light of the body. To the
body, the eyes are as important as the head.  Although, most times falling
vision is often accrued to the natural part of ageing, but it is really a
side effect of what we do with it, while we grow. However, these days
failing of eyesight is no longer restricted among the ageing, it is now
recorded among the young. To avoid this, here are some ways to prevent your
eyes from failing you.

1.    Use screen protector on your computers and reduce the contrast

Avoid eyestrain by reducing the time spend in front of computer screen or
television. Sometimes our work may require using the computer for long,
relief yourself by resting your eyes every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away
for 20 seconds. Get up at least every 2 hours and take a 15-minute break.
Do not forget to also use a screen protector or reduce the contrast of your
computer to prevent eye damage.

2.    Avoid eyestrain

Read under a bright light, the best way to position a reading light is to
have it shine directly onto the page, not over your shoulder. A desk lamp
with an opaque shade pointing directly at the reading material is the best
possible arrangement. A light that shines over your shoulder will cause a
glare, making it more difficult to see the reading material. Try to avoid
glare from windows and lights, and when using a computer use a large font
size for visibility.

3.    Eat balanced diet

To have good eyesight, you must eat good foods that are fortified with
vitamins and mineral, avoid junks as much as you can. Feed more on foods
that contain omega 3 fats, egg, beans, nuts, fresh fruits and dark green
leafy vegetables, which contain more antioxidant, vitamins C and E, such as
carrot, spinach, orange and other citrus fruits.

4.    Avoid excess sugar

Excess of sugar in your blood can pull fluid from the lens of your eye,
affecting your ability to focus. It can also damage the blood vessels in
your retina, thereby obstructing the blood flow to the eyes.  Imbalance
diet and excess of sugar in the blood can also cause type 2 diabetes, which
is the leading cause of blindness. So keep your blood sugar in healthy
range.

5.    Keep away from Trans-fat foods

Trans fat is found in many processed foods and baked goods including
margarine and fried foods like French fries, fried chicken, doughnut,
pastries etc. all these foods contribute to macular degeneration by
interfering with omega -3 in your body. Without omega 3 the body cells
cannot function well, this also applies to your eyes.

6.    Use Sunshades

It not just about wearing glasses but it about using the right pair of
shades that blocks 99% or 100% of UVA and UVB rays will help protect your
eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure boosts your
chances of cataracts and macular degeneration. If your eyes are dry, blink
more.  However, for those wearing glasses, it’s best not to wear glasses
all the time. Taking a break from glasses or contact lenses allows your
eyes to rest. If you need glasses for distance or reading, use them.
Attempting to read without reading glasses will simply strain your eyes and
tire them out. if you use hazardous or airborne materials on the job or at
home, wear safety glasses or protective goggles.

7.    Visit Your doctor regularly

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who are the specialist in eye care.
They can provide general care, treat eye diseases, and perform eye surgery.
Visits to ophthalmologists are necessary because everyone needs a regular
eye exam including young children. It helps protect your sight and let you
see at your best.
