Having twins in the family are always a blessing to couples and they are what most couples wish they have. Twins are unique in a lot of ways and they also have their peculiarities. Though their formative stage could be challenging for parents, once they are grown everybody is happy and their parents begin to enjoy every bit of it.

There are 9 different kinds of twins:

1. Identical Twins: one great thing about identical twins is that they are of the same sex, formed by a fertilized egg which divides into two separate individuals. They are also called monozygotic twins, they have the same gene. They are conceive from one egg and one sperm.

2. Fraternal Twins: they are also called dizygotic twins. In this case two separate eggs are fertilized by two separate sperm. They can be the same sex or different sexes.

3. Half-Identical Twins: half-identical twins are so called because they are neither identical nor fraternal. They share half their genes in common from the mother and the other half different from the two sperms.

4. Mirror Image Twins: this type is not really a type of twins but a term used to describe their features. The features could be that they have birthmarks on opposite sides or one is right-handed while the other is left handed. Mirror Image twins are monozygotic twins that formed from a single fertilized egg.

5. Mixed Chromosome Twins: this this takes place when two separate eggs are fertilized by two separate sperms.

6. Superfecundation Twins: it can be disturbing because it is twins born to different fathers. It happens when a woman releases more than one egg during ovulation and two become fertilized by two different men, resulting in twins who have different fathers

7. Superfetation Twins: This rarely occurs too. It is the occurrence of another pregnancy during an ongoing pregnancy. This is when twins are conceived at different times due to the mother releasing an egg that gets fertilized while she is already pregnant.

8. Conjoined Twins: they are also called Siamese twins. They occur when the egg splits very late and didn’t split completely.

9. Twins with different birthday: this type of twin is not really common but it happens at times. This is a case where one is given birth to some minutes to the close of a day while the other comes early the next day. This is in the case of labour and delivery that start close to midnight and end the next day.

Although, it is believed that there are two major types of twins under which others come. They are Identical Twins or monozygotic twins and Fraternal Twins or dizygotic twins.
