Nigeria’s foremost literary icon, Chinua Achebe has been honoured by Mega Technology giant, Google. Chinua Achebe’s image has been adapted into a doodle by Google in honour of his great achievements as a writer and in celebration of his 87th posthumous birthday.

Reacting to this on its website, Google on Thursday said that it honoured Achebe on its doodle today; Nov. 16 which would have been Achebe’s 87th birthday.

The Google Doodle just as it has been seen is that special logo on Google’s homepage which often changes to mark different holiday period or events, but then the doodle has also been used to celebrate achievements and people.

Google further commenting on their reason for celebrating Achebe said he is a figure of 20th-century literature.

”Chinua Achebe was the studious son of an evangelical priest. A student of English literature, he started writing in the 1950s, choosing English as his medium but weaving the storytelling tradition of the Igbo people into his books.

” His characters were insiders, everyday people such as the village chief (in Things Fall Apart); the priest (in Arrow of God) or the school teacher (in A Man of the People)

”Through their stories, we witness a Nigeria at the crossroads of civilisation, culture and generations.”

The search engine giant also detailed how Achebe had creatively brought to life the tradition of the Igbo people of Nigeria and how he was able to communicate village life with the conjugation of sacred masquerades.
