The senator representing Oyo North senatorial district, Sen. Abdulfatai Buhari yesterday paid the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) fees for 600 secondary school students in his senatorial district.
Senator Buhari, who is the current chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, also donated a bus to the Federation of Oyo State Student Union, FOSSU.
The event which was held at Ogunlola Hall, Oja Igbo, Ogbomoso, was attended by the zonal and local executives of the Nigerian Union of Teachers. NUT, Association of Nigeria Conference of Principal of Private Schools, ANCOPPS, and others.
Speaking at the event, the state commissioner for Education Professor Joseph Olowefela who appreciated the Senator for supporting the state government on education saying his gesture is appreciated and acknowledged.
The commissioner who was represented by Ojelade F, a local inspector of Education in Ogbomoso, charged the students to be more focused and disciplined as their future is in their hands and “the only way you can have a better future is when you do not allow material things to overwhelm your dream.”
Speaking at the event ,one of parents of the beneficiaries, Abdulyekeen Mariam, who is said “this education initiative will go a long way in relieving us and help our students to move forward, unlike some politicians who give cutlasses and guns to the youths, Senator Buhari is helping them to secure a better future. One of my sons who benefited from his educational support programme in 2005 when he was a member of the House of Representatives, is now a graduate,” she added.
Also speaking, State ANCOPPS chairman, Mr Aremu Emmanuel, who commended the senator, saying “Oyo State is fortunate to have the lawmaker in this present,” praying for his success in his future endeavour.”
