An American identified as Marco Antonio Ramirez who allegedly defrauded three Nigerians of $565,000 was on Thursday remanded in prison by an Ikeja High Court.

The defendant who acted as the Managing Director of three companies, USA Now Plc, Eagleford Instalodge Group and USA Now Energy Capital Group, pleaded not guilty to a sixteen-count charge of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

EFCC prosecutor, V.O Aigboje, said Marco Antonio Ramirez committed the offences between February and August 2013.

Ramirez has also been accused of allegedly receiving $10,000 from one Olukayode Sodimu under the guise that the money will help him facilitate an American Green Card with the US Immigration Services.

The American was also accused of collecting $10,000 fraudulently for one Abubakar Umar through a fictitious investment program in the US in order for the latter to be eligible for a US green card.

Ramirez was also accused by the EFCC of collecting $545,000 from one Ambassador Godson Echejue under the pretext that the money was meant for investing in his company Eagle Ford Limited in order to facilitate the procurement of a US green card.

Aigboje, however, pleaded that the court remands Ramirez in prison custody, pending trial.

The counsel to Ramirez, Chukwudi Maduka request that the court leaves his client in EFCC custody as against being taken to Kirikiri or Ikoyi Prisons. He further stressed that they had just received the charge and that they needed time to file a bail application, while also notifying the court that Ramirez was already on administrative bail in the EFCC Abuja office where he is also facing fraud charges.

However, EFCC prosecutor Aigboje informed the court that they were out of bed space at the detention center of EFCC.

The presiding Judge, Justice Josephine Oyefeso finally remanded Ramirez in the Kirikiri prisons and called for an adjournment till July 3 for further hearing.
