The Bauchi State Police Command says a 70-year-old man, Usman Abubakar, is now in custody following allegations that he raped an eight-year-old girl in Tsakanin Bayara, within Bauchi metropolis.

Police say the incident occurred on Sunday, August 24, at about 11:00 a.m., when the suspect allegedly lured the girl into an uncompleted building in the area and sexually assaulted her.
The girl's father reported the matter two days later at the 'E' Division in Yelwa, at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, prompting officers to move in and make the arrest.
Confirming the development, the command's spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, said division operatives apprehended the suspect following the report.
He added that the suspect allegedly confessed to the offence during interrogation, while the victim was taken to a clinic for medical examination and necessary care.
Reacting to the case, the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the alleged assault and assured the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated.
The suspect is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bauchi, as investigators continue work on the case ahead of possible prosecution.
