An 87-year-old man in Ghana has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labour for defiling a nine-year-old girl in Ofankor, a suburb of Accra, after the child told her mother what had been happening to her.
The case came to light on August 29, when the girl’s mother returned home from work and noticed stains on her daughter’s clothing.
Police preliminary investigations indicate that she questioned the child, who then disclosed what had happened.
The girl said the accused, Yaw Gahornu, had allegedly subjected her to repeated acts of carnal violation between July and August 2026.
Further investigation also revealed that Gahornu allegedly lured the child to his sleeping quarters.
Police say he threatened to kill her if she told her mother about the alleged abuse.
Gahornu was charged and arraigned before the Gender-Based Violence Court at the DOVVSU Headquarters.
The court found him guilty of defilement and sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
The Ghanaian police secured the conviction.
