A recent count estimated the Yoruba people to be 21% of the total make up of Nigeria’s population.   As stated earlier, about the Yoruba people’s origination, Yorubas can also be found in other African countries such as Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, United Kingdom, Brazil and to some large extent in North America.   Interestingly, the Yorubas are unique in their styles of music and also unique about the choice of food they take.   Below are 9 Interesting facts to know:  

1. The Yoruba people love to enjoy life while it last

Among fun lovers in the different ethnic groups in Nigeria, Yorubas can be ranked first and at most third. An average Yoruba person in Nigeria will always like to infuse enjoyment in every of his or her daily activities. Fun never stops for an average Yoruba person and life tend to extend  

2. Iro and Buba is most common among the Yoruba people

A Yoruba person seems never to be complete in his attire if there is none of Iro, buba, fila, Sokoto Ipele or even gele in place.   Iro and buba is an attire the Yoruba people will always do with, being one of the oldest traditional wear passed down by Yoruba ancestors.   The abetí ajá is another unique cap amongst Yoruba people. It is one beautiful cap with doggy ears to the right and left which men rock on sokoto and buba. It is one wants fashion style you will want to rock to your next party.

3. Virtually everything reads a meaning to a Yoruba People

You can never take the fact that everything in life reads a meaning to an average Yoruba man. A red cloth on a bunch of banana means danger or don’t touch if not permitted, a boy who failed to pay obeisance to the elderly, a married young woman who still returns and stayed for long in her parent’s home etc. You just can’t take that away from them.  

4. Yorubas are very Expressive People

Yoruba people are expressive about virtually everything surrounding their daily life. An average Yoruba person might not voice out his or her intention in a conventional communication style but may decide to make do with proverbs, talking drum, satirical songs or even make do with some sign language.  

5. Yoruba culture is largely celebrated in Brazil

Due to the effect of slave migration in the colonial era, some reasonable amount of the Yoruba tradition has been inculcated into the culture and tradition of the Brazilians up till this very day.

6. Yoruba constitute one of the largest tribe in Nigeria

After the Hausa people of Nigeria who make up 25% of the population of the country, Yoruba follows next with a total of 21% of the total population of Nigeria.  

7. What about talking Drum

When talking about talking drums, and its historical origination, you will be sincerely wrong if you fail to credit the Yoruba race. Popularly known as gangan, sakara, the talking drum is another instrument with which drummers communicate indirectly with percussion tunes, and this is most prevalent amongst the Yoruba people.

8. The Yoruba language is widely spoken in countries order than Nigeria

More than any other language in Nigeria, Yoruba is widely spoken in countries order than Nigeria. In West Africa alone, speakers of Yoruba language is already nearing 30 million.  

9. The Yoruba Language has larger Dialects
