The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Isiyaku Usman, for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl and dispossessing her of two mobile phones in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed the arrest in a statement released on Monday, saying the incident occurred on September 6, 2026, after the victim's 37-year-old father, a resident of Kari village, Darazo, reported the matter to police.
According to Habib, the suspect lured the young girl into an unfinished building before assaulting her and stealing the two Android phones she was carrying.
"On the same date at about 0800hrs, the victim was on her way to a neighbouring house with two Android phones of the same make, Techno A31, when one Isiyaku Usman 'm', 20 years old, of the same address, lured her into a nearby uncompleted building, robbed her of the phones and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her," Habib said.
He said detectives acted swiftly following the complaint and arrested the suspect while he was still in possession of the stolen phones.
Habib added that both the victim and the suspect were taken to Darazo General Hospital for medical examination, and their statements were subsequently obtained by police.
He said the suspect had voluntarily confessed to the offences and remained in police custody as investigations continued.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the incident and ordered that the case be transferred to the Gender Laboratory of the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation.
Habib said the suspect would be charged in court once investigations were completed.
The CP reiterated the command's zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence, urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant about the movement and safety of their children, and assured the public that justice would be served.
