A close-knit Pennsylvania community is reeling after a tragic incident that turned an 11-year-old boy’s birthday into unimaginable sorrow. Douglas Dietz, 42, was found with a fatal gunshot wound in the family home early on Tuesday morning, January 13. Police say his adopted son, Clayton, has been charged with criminal homicide following the heartbreaking event.

According to court documents, the trouble began when Clayton grew upset after his father told him to go to bed and had previously taken away his Nintendo Switch. The boy reportedly found a key, accessed a safe, loaded a gun, and fired while his father slept. When officers arrived, Clayton told his mother, “Daddy’s dead,” and later admitted to police, “I shot somebody.” The affidavit notes he said he became “mad” and “had someone in mind whom he was going to shoot,” identifying his father.
Clayton and his siblings were adopted by Douglas and his wife in 2018, and neighbours described the family as kind and loving. The boy’s mother told police she woke to a loud noise that sounded like fireworks, then discovered the tragedy when she turned on the lights. Clayton has been denied bail and is being held ahead of a hearing on January 22.
