A disturbing video showing a young woman believed to be an 18-year-old wife with visible facial injuries has generated widespread concern on social media, prompting calls for authorities to investigate allegations of domestic abuse.
The footage, which surfaced on Monday through X user #Hybrid_Ola, captured a tense confrontation between a man identified as the woman's husband and concerned residents who challenged him over claims that he had been physically abusing her.
In the video, neighbours could be heard urging the man to stop harassing the young woman as he attempted to pull her away.
“Madam, leave my wife. You want to drag my wife with me,” the man was heard saying in the video.
A bystander accused the man of repeatedly assaulting the woman and manipulating her emotionally.
“You want to kill her. This girl is just 18 years. This man is brainwashing her; he is beating her daily.”
As the video spread online, many viewers expressed concern over the woman's wellbeing and called for immediate intervention.
In another clip that later emerged online, the young woman was seen at what appeared to be a medical facility alongside human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu. During the recording, Gwamnishu discussed efforts to have the alleged abuser arrested. However, the woman pleaded with those around her not to take legal action against him.
“Please, I am begging you, people. It will be as if it is my fault. The mother does not like me, please. Let me just carry myself and be going,” she said.
She further stated:
“I am not going to the marriage again; you people should leave him. I won’t go to the marriage again; don’t arrest him.”
Her appeal not to arrest the man sparked mixed reactions online, with many social media users questioning why she appeared reluctant to support action against her husband despite the circumstances shown in the videos.
The incident also drew the attention of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency after X user #Updateboyx tagged the agency in a post. Responding publicly, the agency wrote:
“We are on it. Thank you for tagging us.”
The response reassured many users who had been calling for official intervention.
Several social media users urged law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly. While #Kelly_kingz001 called for authorities to step in, #CYCHINAKA denounced all forms of spousal abuse and stressed the need for stronger moral values in society.
Others focused on the young woman's apparent emotional and physical condition.
“She is so scared. 18 years old and married shouldn’t be in the same sentence. Her parents failed her,” wrote #Memnefer.
Another user, #DeNiike_, commented:
“She looks disoriented… I hope she breaks free.”
Reacting to the viral footage, #Cyberhijabitech questioned how a teenager could be subjected to such treatment, maintaining that “no man in his right sense will treat his wife bad.”
Similarly, #Franklin579003 said the video was deeply troubling and encouraged the woman to leave the marriage, while #InyangBiet called for authorities to verify details surrounding the relationship, including her age and the legality of the union.
Some commenters broadened the discussion to societal issues, arguing that greater awareness and education are needed to help young women identify and avoid abusive relationships before they become trapped in them.
The incident has reignited public debate about domestic violence, child and early marriage concerns, and the difficulties authorities often encounter when alleged victims are unwilling to cooperate with legal proceedings against their partners.
It has also highlighted the growing influence of social media in bringing cases of alleged abuse to public attention and prompting swift responses from relevant government agencies.
