He was convicted for the March 2023 killing of his infant boy after initially denying paternity when mother Noluthando Mlambo became pregnant and urging her to terminate.
On March 1 2023 he arranged a meeting under the pretense of providing items for the child, sending the grandmother away before three unknown men accosted Mlambo, enabling him to snatch the baby and flee.
The tiny body was found dumped in bushes two days later, with a post mortem confirming death from sharp force injuries to the neck.
State Advocate Senzo Zindela presented evidence including witness testimony and a confession that shattered Shongwe's denials.
The court noted Shongwe showed no remorse throughout the trial as reported in IOL News.
