In Gombe's Federal Low Cost neighbourhood, hearts are heavy with grief after Abdul’azeez Aliyu, known warmly as Dan-malam, was taken far too soon on Saturday. The 27-year-old had just married his beloved Jamila on December 26, filled with dreams of a bright future together.
A family friend, Rabi’u Baushe, the Baushen Gombe, shared fond memories of Abdul’azeez as disciplined and hardworking. He had recently finished university, landed a government job in Abuja, and ran a café that employed local youths. “Abdul’azeez had just returned from documentation in the nation’s capital but did not live to resume duty,” Baushe said sadly.
The incident happened when Abdul’azeez stopped at his shop with his mother. A dismissed worker appeared, an argument followed, and tragedy struck swiftly in her presence. Attempts to save him at Specialist Hospital were unsuccessful.
Jamila’s father, Malam Ibrahim Garba Hassan Pantami, spoke of his daughter’s deep pain. “She was in deep pain when I met her. Because she is a memorizer of the Qur’an, I advised her to hold firmly to her recitation for comfort,” he said, praying for strength and a better tomorrow for the young widow.
Police spokesperson SP Buhari Abdullahi confirmed a 16-year-old suspect is in custody. “The suspect claimed he was demanding money owed to him by the victim. An argument broke out and he stabbed Abdul’azeez in anger,” he said, noting investigations continue.
