The Kwara State Government has taken custody of a newborn baby allegedly abandoned by her mother, identified as a student, shortly after delivery at a hospital in the state.
The incident occurred at Apalara Medical Hospital, where the baby was delivered on Thursday before being abandoned.
The newborn was later rescued and taken to the Ministry of Women Affairs on Friday by a police officer, Medinat Garuba, alongside the hospitalโs Chief Medical Director, Giwa Luqman.
Speaking on the development, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Opeyemi Oluwakemi, confirmed that the government has assumed responsibility for the child and will ensure she receives proper medical and physical care.
She emphasised the stateโs commitment to protecting vulnerable children, noting that every child matters.
Luqman revealed that the student had initially sought to terminate the pregnancy but was counselled to carry it to term.
However, she reportedly abandoned the baby shortly after delivery.
Authorities commended those who ensured the baby was safely handed over, while reiterating that the Child Rights Law provides pathways such as fostering or adoption for abandoned children, following due process.
