Police fired teargas at a crowd of elderly protesters gathered outside Lagos House in Ikeja on Monday, scattering pensioners who had come to press the state government for money many say they are long owed.
The demonstrators, drawn from the Nigeria Union of Pensioners and the Contributory Pension Scheme, had converged on the seat of government to demand the immediate implementation of approved pension increases and wage awards.
Beyond the increases, the retirees are also seeking payment of outstanding pension arrears and other entitlements that have piled up over time, grievances they say have left many of them struggling.
What began as a demonstration by mostly elderly citizens ended in chaos when police moved in with teargas, dispersing the crowd before their demands could be fully heard.
