A young Nigerian chef, John Ocholofu Bawa, is celebrating his remarkable transformation from working a low paying kitchen job to leading culinary efforts for major international firms while earning top recognition in African Asian cuisine, according to his social media posts.

Born the only son among six sisters, this Idoma indigene of Benue State grew up in Kaduna, began his journey by first entering kitchen life in a Chinese restaurant section in Yaba Lagos to enduring long hours washing vegetables and mopping floors.
Bawa returned home nearly broke, yet driven by pure determination to rebuild everything, from selling suya under the hot sun and thick smoke at the Kaduna Buy and Sell market.
'I started as a kitchen cleaner in 2018, earning just 20k monthly and went on to be awarded Best African Asian Chef in Nigeria as well as becoming a Food Scientist from Kaduna Polytechnic.
'I am super proud of my little success story and it’s only just beginning. I have served twice as the Head Chef of Power China and also received a Recognition Award from the General China Chambers of Commerce,' he stated on his Bawalicious Facebook page.
'In 2019, I left Lagos as a kitchen assistant with nothing but a broken Pop 2 phone and ₦15,000 in my account, just enough for transportation back to Kaduna.
'No savings. No backup plan. Just a stubborn belief that my story could not end there. I started again from scratch selling suya at Kaduna Buy and Sell. Smoke in my eyes. Heat on my skin. Doubt in the voices around me.
'But deep inside there was a fire greater than the charcoal I stood behind every evening. I had seen kitchens. I had washed plates. I had cleaned floors. I had watched chefs create magic. And I told myself one day I will not just cook I will lead. I wanted to understand food.
'Years later that same young man would rise to become Head Chef twice recognized as the youngest African Asian chef to cater for Power China, the China Chambers of Commerce and CCETC Ogua Energy. This is the story of a kitchen cleaner who refused to remain one." he added.
