Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has shared a deeply personal reflection on marriage, family, and lifelong commitment, offering a rare glimpse into the values that shaped her life beyond the screen.
In an emotional account, the celebrated actress revealed that she got married at the age of 19 in a union arranged by her parents, an experience that initially filled her with fear and uncertainty.
“Marriage found me when I was just 19. It wasn’t my choice, my parents arranged it. At first, I was scared. I didn’t know how to love a man I didn’t choose,” she said.
Despite her initial apprehension, Ozokwor explained that love eventually grew between her and her husband. Their marriage lasted 23 years, marked by devotion, perseverance, and sacrifice, especially during his prolonged illness.
“He was sick for 15 of those years, and in 2000, he passed away,” she recounted.
The actress said the marriage produced three biological children, and her heart for family extended even further as she adopted five more children. Although she later lost one, she is now a proud mother of seven.
Following her husband’s death, Ozokwor made a firm decision never to remarry, choosing instead to dedicate her life to raising her children.
“I never remarried. I wanted to stay with my children and raise them well,” she said.
Reflecting on modern relationships, the Nollywood icon expressed concern about the fragility of today’s marriages, noting that despite increased self-awareness and personal development, many unions still fail.
“Today, people take too long fixing themselves, yet marriages don’t last. In our time, our parents chose for us, and we stayed committed,” she observed.
Ozokwor revealed that she raised her children with strong values, emphasizing respect, responsibility, and the sanctity of marriage. She added that she has consistently advised her children to view marriage as a lifelong commitment.
“I’ve told my children never to think of divorce. I raised my daughters to be respectful and my sons to be responsible,” she said.
According to the actress, the foundation of her family was built not on convenience, but on hardship, love, respect, and sacrifice, principles she believes are essential for any lasting home.
Patience Ozokwor’s story stands as a powerful reminder that commitment, resilience, and selflessness remain timeless pillars of marriage, even in an ever-changing world.
