The family of football superstar, Lionel Messi, has confirmed that his father, Jorge Messi, is currently receiving medical treatment for an undisclosed illness, while calling on the media to exercise responsibility and restraint amid widespread speculation about his condition.

In a statement issued through Messi's media office, the family confirmed that Jorge, 68, is under medical observation but is showing positive signs of progress.
"Jorge is going through a health situation. He is currently under medical observation, recovering and progressing favourably within his current condition," the statement read.
The family did not disclose the nature of the illness.
The statement came in direct response to reports circulating in Argentina that falsely claimed Jorge Messi had died, claims the family did not address directly but implicitly rejected through their update on his condition.
Appealing for measured reporting, the family said: "At times like these, we ask for responsibility, prudence and humanity. A person's health and the peace of mind of their loved ones should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest."
The family added that any further updates on Jorge's health would be communicated through official channels.
The confirmation follows remarks made by Lionel Messi himself after Argentina's 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening FIFA World Cup group stage match, during which he acknowledged being in the middle of a difficult personal situation without elaborating further.
