Son K!lls Mother Over Farmland Dispute - Osun Police

A family dispute over land in Osun State, Nigeria, has ended in tragedy after a son allegedly killed his mother and buried her body on the same farmland at the centre of their disagreement.

The Osun State Police Command said on Wednesday that it had arrested Taye Kasali, of Bode-Osi, in connection with the death of his mother, Kudirat Kasali.

According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, the case began when both mother and son were reported missing.

‘On 1st September 2026 at about 7:30pm, there was a report at Bode-Osi Division that one Mrs Kudirat Kasali and her son, Taye Kasali, were missing,' Ojelabi said.

Police operatives launched an investigation, relying on intelligence to track down the son.

‘Following the report, Police operatives commenced investigation and, through intelligence-led investigation, the suspect, one Taye Kasali 'm' (son), was arrested on 7th September 2026 in connection with the crime,' the statement said.

Under questioning, Kasali reportedly confessed to the killing.

‘The suspect was thoroughly interrogated, which led to his confession,' Ojelabi said.

Police said the son pointed to years of family tension as the backdrop to the killing.

‘During the course of interrogation, the suspect claimed that his mother had allegedly been referring to him as a mad person and had also threatened to lease out the farmland, which he described as the major source of livelihood for the family,' Ojelabi said.

He then detailed how the killing was carried out.

‘The suspect further confessed that he killed his mother on 31/8/2026 by slitting her throat with a machete and subsequently buried her body in a shallow grave within the farm,' Ojelabi said.

Investigators said Kasali later led them back to the farm, where his mother's remains and the weapon were recovered.

Ojelabi said the suspect led police operatives to the location of the shallow grave, where the remains of the deceased were recovered alongside the machete allegedly used in committing the crime.

The State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, has ordered a full investigation and said the suspect will be charged to court once the probe is completed.

Zungura also assured members of the public that justice would be served in accordance with the law regarding the matter.

The command used the case to renew an appeal to residents over unreported disappearances.

‘The Command also urges members of the public to promptly report cases of missing persons and other suspicious activities to the Police or other relevant security agencies and help with relevant information when necessary,’ the statement read.
