South African television icon, Ian von Memerty, famed for hosting Strictly Come Dancing South Africa and judging on South Africa's Got Talent, has died at 61 after publicly documenting his decision to end his life on his own terms.

His family announced the passing in Johannesburg in the early hours of February 23 2026, sparking nationwide debate on autonomy aging and end of life choices according to BBC reports.
'As a family we have done everything we can to love & respect him on his journey. We ask for privacy & respect as we deal with our own pain having lost someone we've loved very much.' the family stated in their announcement on his Facebook page.
In a-months-long Facebook series titled Dying for a Better Life, Von Memerty shared tearful videos and reflections, fearing the physical and cognitive decline of aging, poverty and financial dependence on loved ones.
In one emotional clip, he described telling his family his plans as "one of the worst days" of his life.
The entertainer born in Zimbabwe but long rooted in South African arts battled personal demons including witnessing his parents' painful slow deaths which fueled his advocacy for control over one's end.
He referred to his act as self-deliverance emphasizing it stemmed from rational choice not depression or terminal illness though some reports mention a history of health struggles like osteosarcoma in family discussions.
