A couple in Hong Kong has been charged with child neglect after their young son was swept into the sea during the dangerous conditions of Super Typhoon Ragasa, authorities confirmed.

The incident happened last September when the family visited a breakwater along Ka Yip Street in Chai Wan to watch the powerful waves despite a No. 8 typhoon warning signal being in force.
During the outing, a large wave suddenly struck the area, sweeping the mother and her five-year-old son into the sea.
Witnesses said the boy’s father immediately jumped into the water in a desperate attempt to rescue them.
A nearby boatman eventually pulled the unconscious mother and child from the water before emergency crews rushed them to the hospital for treatment.
Both were admitted to intensive care but later stabilised.
Months after the frightening ordeal, police confirmed that the parents, a 40-year-old father and a 38-year-old mother, have now been formally charged with ill-treatment or neglect of a child.
The case is scheduled to be heard at the Eastern Court.
Authorities have repeatedly warned residents against “storm chasing” or visiting waterfronts during severe weather, noting that such behaviour can put both children and rescuers at serious risk.
