Two Bangladeshi nationals, a man and a woman, have been put to death in Saudi Arabia, leaving unanswered questions for the families who may be waiting for news back home.

The Saudi Ministry of Interior named them as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar. It said both were executed on Wednesday in the Makkah region.
In its statement, the ministry said the executions showed the Saudi government’s commitment to maintaining security, upholding justice and enforcing Islamic law against those who violate the sanctity of mosques and the dignity of others. It warned that anyone who commits similar acts would face the punishments prescribed by Islamic law.
The two were accused of a sexual act reportedly committed inside a mosque in the holy city of Mecca. The ministry said security authorities arrested them after the incident and charged them following an investigation.
A competent court found both guilty and sentenced them to death as a discretionary punishment known as “Ta’zir,” citing the gravity of their actions and the violation of the mosque’s sanctity.
The ministry added that the relevant judicial authority upheld the judgment before a royal order was issued to carry out the sentences in accordance with Islamic law.
The statement did not say whether the families of Basir and Siti had been informed, and it gave no information about their relatives or where they came from in Bangladesh.
