An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg grows outside the uterus (womb) or in the fallopian tubes.
It is a pregnancy that may not develop properly and cause issues for the woman which may lead to death or delay in child bearing.
To avoid ectopic pregnancy, much may not be done but you can reduce the risk factors. Here is how:
1. Avoid Sexually Transmitted Infections
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) must be avoided as it increases the chances for a woman to experience an ectopic pregnancy. Safety measures must be put in place by every woman to ensure she protects herself from these infections.
2. Treat Infections properly
In the case of a woman already suffering from a Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), proper treatment must be ensured because if not treated properly, it may cause inflammations that damage the reproductive system and will eventually lead to ectopic pregnancy.
To avoid delayed treatment of infections, every woman that is sexually active should visit health practitioners regularly for check-ups, this is because some infections don’t show symptoms until after a long time.
You can also watch out for the following symptoms of STIs in women. They are:
a. Abdominal pain
b. Vaginal discharge
c. Painful urination
d. Vaginal odour
e. Pain during intercourse
3. Stop smoking
Smoking tobacco can increase the chance of a woman experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. It is therefore advisable for her to stop smoking or seek professional help on how to quit the habit.
4. Monitor pregnancy early
Once a woman confirms she is pregnant, it is important for her to consult a health practitioner so that a proper check-up can be done as well as close monitoring as the pregnancy progresses. This won’t lead to complications.
