Boko Haram attack: 5 UNIMAID staff killed
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Maiduguri chapter, said that five staff of the institution including two geologists, two technologists and a driver were killed in the attack by Boko Haram insurgents on Tuesday while four are still missing.
Dr Danny Manmam, the Chairman of the association, University of Maiduguri chapter, who confirmed the development in Maiduguri on Thursday identified two of the victims as Ibrahim Yusuf and Aji Kolo.The third victim, Idris Abubakar Njodi was buried on Thursday.
It will be recalled that the insurgents ambushed the military escort and oil workers, who were traveling in a convoy of about 10 vehicles at a village along Gubio and Magumeri local government area. The team were returning from an oil exploration in the Lake Chad Basin.
The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman said that bodies of an officer, eight soldiers and a civilian, who died in the attack had been recovered and evacuated to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital.
However, Mamman said that five staff of the institution were killed in the attack.
“We were first elated when we heard that the military rescued the victims. But, to our dismay we discovered that they were all killed. Our initial hope to see them alive was dashed. The soldiers brought only dead bodies,” he said.
“Four other staff are still missing and we are seriously concerned about their safety, we do not know their whereabouts,” he said.
