Community Leader Assaults Wife With punches and Pestle

Peter Igboeli, A 54-year-old community leader was on Friday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly punching and using a pestle to hit his wife.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and now faces a two-count charge of assault and threat to life.

Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, the prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in April 2013 and in June 2017, at Trade Fair Complex, Alaba, in Lagos.

She said that the accused assaulted his wife, Anthonia Igboeli, by punching her in the face and using a pestle to hit her, breaking two of her fingers.

Omisakin said that the accused had also threatened to burn down the shop of the complainant.

According to Sections 56(1) and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, his actions are against the law

He was however granted bail by The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A.T. Elias, based on self-recognizance and the hearing was adjourned until Aug. 7. 2017
