Cultivating Early Reading Habit in Children

Children love reading more when you expose them to books at a tender age. The concept of early reading is what New Zealand educationist Marie Clay analyzed in her study in 1966. Marie Clay in her work emphasized that introducing books to children early will help preschoolers read faster when they get to kindergarten and further on in their classes as the day progresses.
Further studies by some literary scholars also state that reading can be cultivated when certain elements of emergent literacy are put in place for a preschooler. Some of these Elements Suitable to aid Emergent Reading are.
1. Colour
The colourful text helps children to read well. It is a good lure, used to get the attention of young children. Children appreciate colours more than just seeing text. They are more friendly with it and will always want to read more when colours are involved.
2. storytelling
Every child you see today reading well is a product of a story being told to him or her. Storytelling is one of the bedrock of early literacy. Storytelling helps an emergent reader to recall the plot and summary of a book. It is one of the earliest forms of helping young readers to read. Infusing storytelling into literary text for children often helps them to easily recall what is been taught.
3. Images
Of all the two mentioned above, images supersede. Helping young children to create a mental picture of what you are reading to them is one of the best ways to teach them. The beautiful thing about the picture is that it never end there. They think about it all through till they come in contact with something that looks exactly like what they were reading to them.
4. Making writing and literary materials available
For you to help your children to read well get them pens, crayon, books and story books. Children will make use of what they see hanging around them.
5. Read yourself
Don’t just preach it, as a parent, enjoy reading too. When your young toddler sees you reading, such child begins to ask in his mind why he should read always and before you know it, such child will begin reading too.
6. Buy Enough Story Book
That is where you and the children will read from. You have to keep some collections in your children library. When one is becoming ‘stale’ so to say, pick another and take on a new chapter.
Reading can be very tiring for some children who might want to play, but when you foster unity, get your child his favourite between you and your children, they eventually get to know why you are doing what you always do.
