Culture Flasks and the process of Cell Culturing

Cell culturing is the process of taking cells from a living organism and allowing them to grow in a controlled condition. This method is used to keep record of cell lines.

Cells are often grown in restricted conditions so they can be observed in order to see what types of changes that occur over a chosen period of time. The process of culturing is also a safe way to of observing the cell’s growth away from the living being as the type of growth that occurs can be dangerous to the health of the being.

Why doctors and scientists use this method

Doctors and scientists use the method of culturing in order to find out what is going on within a human or an animal as well as to help with finding cures for certain conditions and illnesses that an animal or human might be experiencing. Thus process has been going on for many years, and it works well so it will continue to be a process that is used for the purpose of research and for finding cures for conditions.

Cultures also help scientists and medical researchers have a better understanding of why certain cells and organisms behave in certain patterns.

Aseptic Technique

When it is suspected that there is a microbial infection within the cell sample, the process of aseptic technique is used to remove the infection. A sterile hood is used during this process and as well as a microbe-free workspace. The hood is filtered very well to ensure the natural state of the cells is undisturbed other than the process of the task at hand. Gloves are also used in this process to avoid any type of contamination and the hoods are cleaned with ethanol.

Using the proper equipment

There are various different types of equipment containers and tools that are used for the purpose of taking cultures. One of the main types of containers that are used to properly take cell samples for growth are culture flasks. Culture flasks properly and safely hold the cells in a sealed container to allow for growth and observation.

There are different types of culture flasks available in different sizes and shapes used depending on the cell sample taken and the size of the sample. They are generally clear so that the contents of the flasks can be easily observed, and there are measurement marks on the outside of them for collecting the proper amount of cells as well as for solution mixing. Solutions are often mixed when cells need to be observed for chemical reaction purposes. Caps on some of the culture flasks have filter holes on the top of them for proper ventilation.

The factors that should be well-maintained while performing cell culturing include:

  • Humidity – Humidity between 97 to 100 percent should be well maintained.
  • pH– The pH should fall within the range of 7.0 to 7.7
  • Atmosphere – There should be at least 5 to 7 percent carbon dioxide present.

Depending upon the type of cell growth that is taking place, will determine the various biochemical that are used.
