President Buhari vows to cancel rice importation in 2018

It is a great joy for families in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba state as the price of local rice has dramatically decreased in its major market.

According to a survey conducted on Wednesday by Nigeria News Agency (NAN) at Gadar Bobbji, Kasuwan Bera and Mile Six markets, it was gathered that the price of the local rice had greatly decreased.

The survey explains that a measure of local rice selling between N650 and N750 about two to three weeks ago is now in the range of 480 and N550, while a bag which was formally N28,000 or N30,000 now goes between N23,000 and N24,000 respectively.

Speaking to one of the leader of the rice sellers at Gadar Bobboji market, Alhaji Nura Mohammed, the price deduction was attributed to the availability of the commodity in the market. Alhaji Mohammed said the bumper harvest experienced by farmers also contributed to the increase in supply.

He further added that the price could drop further ahead of Christmas if the present price was sustained.

However, a measure of exotic rice sold for N950 two weeks ago and now sells at N1,000, while a bag of rice (50kg) sells between 18,500 and N19,000.
