Former first lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan has been fined N500, 000 by the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt for withdrawing a suit instituted against The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Mrs. Jonathan, in February 2017, instituted a suit against EFCC for infringing on her rights; she sought that the court should give an order for enforcement of her fundamental rights to own property, privacy, family life and freedom from discrimination.

As the matter resumed before the court on Monday, Sammie Somiari, the lawyer for Mrs. Jonathan told the court about the wish of his client to discontinue the suit. He said he had filed an application before the court to this effect.

The counsel to the EFCC, Kayode Oni said Mrs. Jonathan had the right to discontinue the case but he insisted that N500, 000 must be charged for the cost of filing and the processes in response to the suit.

EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren confirmed that Justice Saliu Seidu of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt struck out the suit against the commission and ordered that the cost of N500, 000 must be paid by the former First Lady.
