A young man has died while competing with another suitor for a lady’s hand in marriage in Katsina.
The incident which happened at Durmin Biri village, in the Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State involved a man flogged to death after sustaining a severe head injury.
Sources from the police said the man died of his head injury while contesting for the hand in marriage of a lady with another man, Ahmed Saidu in a Fulani traditional game of Sharo.
Sharo is a traditional game amongst the Fulani Hausas where two male suitors are being flogged for a woman’s hand in marriage. The one amongst the duo who could withstand the painful beating wins and becomes eligible to marry the woman.
Inusa allegedly flogged Saidu without any incident, but the flogging resulted into tragedy when it was Saidu’s turn to flog Inusa.
The rules of the Sharo game dictates that suitors be hit on the back but Saidu allegedly hit Inusa on the head, going against the rule of the game.
Inusa was said to have fainted after he was hit on the head, and eventually died.
Katsina State Police Command spokesman, DSP Gambo Isah confirmed the incident and noted that.
“Inusa’s father, Mallam, reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of Saidu.”
He added also that Inusa’s corpse had been released to the family and buried according to Islamic rites.
