Health Care for men above 50 Years of Age
As we age, the body has different needs and responses. So it is necessary when choosing your food and exercise, take into consideration the age.
Genetics is an important factor in determining the quality of aging, but it is still possible that its genetic load is unfavorable, break the genetic load and have a good quality of life at any age. As cardiologist Donald Lloyd Jones says, “Some genes may carry the risk for disease, but a healthy lifestyle can beat the endogenous standard.”
The Ministry of Health considers the male population to be a range with high morbidity rates and a public health problem, as male mortality rates are considerably higher when compared to female rates in all age groups.
Among the major risk factors are high blood pressure, obesity, type II diabetes and harmful habits such as abuse of unhealthy fats, salt and sweets, alcoholic beverages, smoking and sedentary lifestyle.
So if you are over 50, do not neglect your health so you do not have to be cared for by others. Here are some basic care that every man should take:
Seek medical advice and see your general health. Do a checkup if you have not done so far. This check-up should include:
Laboratory tests to check
Blood:
Levels of glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol, uric acid, creatinine, complete blood count and testosterone levels men may also have the so-called “menopause”, which is Andropause, a significant drop in testosterone levels. PSA to check for prostate problems and C-reactive protein (CRP) – to check for viral infections and autoimmune diseases.
Urine:
Check for general kidney, sugar or blood conditions in the urine if there are any problems related to diabetes such as proteinuria – presence of protein in the urine, which when above normal is considered a serious problem and the Type 1 (EAS) test.
Outpatient examinations to check
The heart: auscultation of the organ, blood pressure measurement, electrocardiogram, exercise test.
A prostate – examination that can be done through rectal touch or blood test (PSA).
The colon – colonoscopy – examination to detect possible wounds or intestinal cancer. It should be done every 5 years after age 50, or if there are changes, every two years.
Lungs: Chest x-ray.
Caring for food
As metabolism decelerates with aging, it is wise to decrease the size of the dish more and more. Eat less = live longer.
Include more fiber, vegetables, fruits and vegetables in food.
Prefer lean proteins like chicken, fish, and white cheeses and fry away fried foods, especially in refined oils. Soybeans should not be used by men, especially in this age group, because in addition to phytosteroids, similar to estrogen (female hormone), there are studies relating the overuse of soy to dementia.
Decrease or cut down on your food simple carbohydrates such as soft drinks, sweets, white breads, cookies, etc.
Include whole grains and avoid refined grains.
Exercises
If you are sedentary, before you start running around, take the checkup described above and wait for medical confirmation of fitness. Over the years, the tendency is to lose muscle and accumulate fat. However, with proper exercise and nutrition, you can reach 60 with the same weight as 20 years.
The best exercises for those over 50:
Hydro-gymnastics, walking, running (under professional supervision, less frequently – 3 times a week and rest intercalated). But, always starting slowly.
