How to care for your Teeth and Gums

There is a proper way by which you should brush and floss your teeth every day.  These instructions come in handy for those that may find it difficult to successfully brush their teeth.

Proper brushing technique provides the first steps for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. It also helps to reduce the risk of having tooth decay and gum disease, which are the major causes of tooth loss.

Brushing Techniques like:

  1. Brush your teeth gently on all sides using a soft-bristle brush and fluoride toothpaste. Make sure to replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.
  2. Make sure to use small circular motions and short back-and-forth strokes.
  3. Move your brush carefully and gently along your gum line to avoid injuries or damage to the gum.
  4. Brush your tongue lightly or use a tongue scraper to help provide maximum tongue wash.
  5. Use dental floss or a water flosser to clean in between your teeth. This helps in removing plaque or food that’s leftover in your teeth which your brush cannot get to.
  6. Make sure to rinse after you floss to remove residues that have been left after flossing in your mouth.

Individuals with physical conditions like arthritis or other conditions that limit the motion of the hand may find it difficult to hold and make use of a toothbrush.

These are some helpful tips:

  • Make use of an electric or battery-powered toothbrush.
  • Make sure to purchase a toothbrush that has a larger handle.
  • Use a wide elastic or rubber band to attach the toothbrush to your hand.
