All over the world today marks the International Day of the Girl Child. It was first observed on October 11th 2017. Plan International introduced the concept to the United Nations.

The International Day of the Girl child is observed to support the creation of more and better opportunities for the Girls all over the world.
Another purpose for the celebration of the International Day of the girl child is to create awareness about gender inequality and problems girls face because of their gender worldwide.
The International Day of the Girl child also points to the world the various issues and challenges the female gender face. Such as:
- Discrimination
- Violence against women
- Forced or Child marriage
- Sexual assaults
- Lack of access to education
After the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women adopted October 11th 2012 to inaugurate the International Day of the Girl Child, it was stated that this identifies with
- The empowerment and investment in the girl child which is important for economic growth
- Eradication of poverty and Extreme poverty
- Involvement of girls in the various decisions that affects them
