Before talking about high blood pressure popularly called hypertension, you need to know what blood pressure is. Blood pressure is the measure of the force of blood pushing against blood vessel walls.

Blood pressure is measured using two figures which are written as X/YmmHg.

The first figure that is up is called Systolic Blood pressure which is the maximum pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts(beats) and pushes blood out into the body while the lower figure is called diastolic blood pressure which is the minimum pressure in the arteries between beats when the heart relaxes to fill with blood.

Now, high blood pressure (HBP), also called hypertension makes the heart work harder to pump blood out of the body and contribute to hardening of the arteries which can lead to heart failure. It is dangerous and it is when the blood pressure is above the normal range.

What is the normal range for blood pressure?

Normal: Less than 120 over 80 (120/80)
Elevated: 120-129/less than 80
Stage 1 high blood pressure: 130-139/80-89
Stage 2 high blood pressure: 140 and above/90 and above
Hypertension crisis: higher than 180/higher than 120. You need to see a doctor right away

Symptoms of high blood pressure:

headache,
blurred vision,
dizziness, and
shortness of breath,
chest pain, and
heart attack.

Causes of High Blood Pressure:

There are several things that contribute to high blood pressure but the exact causes are not known

. Smoking

. Being overweight or obese
. Lack of physical activity
. Too much salt in the diet
. Too much alcohol consumption
. Stress
. Older age especially from age 35
. Genetics
. Family history of high blood pressure
. Chronic kidney disease
. Adrenal and thyroid disorders
. Sleep apnea
. People who eat too many fatty foods or foods with too much salt

1. You can change your diet

2. Stop living a sedentary lifestyle by doing regular exercise

3. Reduce or eliminate salt intake

4. Work on your weight

5. Reduce some pound and concentrate on your waistline

6. Eat a healthy diet

7. Quit smoking and drinking alcohol

8. Stop stressing yourself

9. Get support, monitor your blood pressure at home and always visit your doctor.
