One of the best ways to add to what your children have learned in Social Study and History subjects in their various schools is to explore the historical culture of Nigeria by visit the Ibadan museums that hold an array of priceless historical artefacts.
The premier museum in Ibadan is the Museum of National Unity. This museum is classified into four distinct galleries: the Unity Gallery, Masquerade Gallery, Pottery Gallery and Yoruba Gallery.
The Unity Gallery is a compilation of a wide variety of Musical Instruments from all over Nigeria. The objects consist of drums, gongs, rattles and several types of xylophones. These drums have interesting stories attached to them. Joko-tofofo, a cylindrical drum, is believed to treat impotence. This section of the museum has another unique attraction, which is a drum which reportedly helps an older woman to find a husband.
The Yorba Gallery gives insight into the nation’s transitory past, faith and the numerous archaeological findings. Some of the exhibited items include uniquely carved door panels and hangings and the single-headed drum known as Ogboni.
Pottery Gallery
The Pottery Gallery displays a unique collection of ceramic vessels that served different purposes. The objects displayed here are a clear indication of the workmanship that existed around 3,000 years ago. Some of the exhibits include a Kula, which keeps things cool, bowl-shaped pots used for preparing food and punctured pots which were probably used as strainers.
The Masquerade Gallery is dedicated to various departed spirits that are an integral part of Nigeria. This segment of the Museum also displays a wide range of exotic masks and several musical devices.
