Arsenal striker and Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi has shared his touching experience while growing up and how his uncle, former Super Eagles skipper Austin Okocha, helped him to find his feet.
‘’Growing up as a kid, there were times when I thought I was going to get released,’’ Iwobi said to Soccer Laduma. ‘’But my mum and dad were always there to help. I have had some difficult times and, without my family and my uncle (Austin Okocha), I wouldn’t be where I am today. ‘’Considering the difficult path that I have had, my Arsenal career has been amazing. I’m on a good way. However, I’m still young and I have got a long way to go.’’
Iwobi joined Arsenal while still at primary school, and was first involved in a first-team match as an unused substitute in a League Cup match against West Bromwich Albion on 25 September 2013. He signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal in October 2015.
On 27 October 2015, Iwobi made his first-team debut for the club, starting in a 3–0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the Round of 16 of the League Cup.
Iwobi started his international career as a youth for England, where he won the Victory Shield of 2011.
He made his senior debut for the Super Eagles on 8 October 2015, replacing Ahmed Musa in the 57th minute of a 2–0 friendly defeat to DR Congo in Visé, Belgium.
Alex Iwobi scored two goals for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in an International friendly match against Argentina on Tuesday 14/11/2017, where Argentina was defeated by 4-0 by the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
