Often times, husbands have been put in a tight corner because of the incessant rift between their mothers and their wives. This makes some men find it difficult to know where to stand when knotty issues arise. Though it is quite normal and natural to stand with their wives for peace to reign in their marriage, however, taking this decision is usually a very hard nut to crack.
Wives versus mothers-in-law quarrel is actually a serious issue and we shall be looking at major causes of this situation:
1. Feeling of loss of a son to another woman
Mothers-in-law find it difficult to come to terms with the fact that their son is married, and sometimes, they feel they have lost their son to another woman. They find it hard to believe he is old enough to take care of himself but still want to be involved in his life.
2. Rivalry ingrained in some women
Most problems can be traced to some unwholesome expectations from the daughter-in-law who sees all mothers-in-law as the same. That no matter what you do, they can never be satisfied and this sometimes comes from what they learnt from friends while growing up or what they saw in another woman’s marriage. This makes some women form opinions even before marriage

3. Competition for the man’s affection
There is also competition for the man’s affection between his mother and wife. Some mothers are not ready to surrender because they feel he might not have the time for them again.
4. The mother/son attachment
There is usually a special attachment between mothers and their sons. They truly don’t want this bind to break by anything so they see their wife’s daughter as a threat they can deal with and so want her out of the equation by all means.

5. Financial issues
Some mothers-in-law feel threatened because they believe that their son’s shift in focus to their marriages might stop the financial support they have been enjoying before he got married.
6. Assumptions
Some ladies just assume that mothers-in-law are a pain in the neck and judgemental in nature.
7. Authority
Parties involved feel they have rights to claim; the mother-in-law wants to give orders as the mother while the wife also wants to protect her territory from intruders, including her mother-in-law.

8. Privacy
Wives want their privacy because they want to enjoy alone time with their husbands. Sometimes, the mother-in-law will want his son around and to the wife, it is too much a luxury to part with
9. Wives referring to Mothers-in-law as spies
Some wives see their mother-in-law as a spy who is on assignment. This makes such wives to fight her with everything they’ve got even before she carries out their supposed work. They see mothers-in-law as a monitoring spirit.
