A 25-year-old man, Mustakeem Ahmad has killed his colleague for allegedly introducing him to smoking which later led to throat cancer.
Ahmad, a cook with west Delhi restaurant shot his colleague on Thursday and was arrested on Friday.
The grieved cancer patient told his interrogators that he was burning with hate towards the victim from Myanmar that he purchased a pistol and practised firing to ensure that he did not miss his target.
The victim, 25-year-old Inayat, also worked as a cook at a restaurant in Uttam Nagar, Delhi in India for the past 18 months.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-west) Shibesh Singh, said Ahmad was frustrated and developed enmity against Inayat after his colleague was preferred above him.
“Though Ahmad and Inayat were friends at the workplace, Inayat was reportedly better at his job and well-behaved and soon became the favourite of the restaurant owner,”
However, Ahmad took to smoking cigarettes and marijuana, under the alleged influence of Inayat.
“In the course of time, Ahmad developed throat infection, forcing him to consult a doctor. Ahmad has claimed that the doctor told him he had developed throat cancer due to excessive smoking,” said the DCP.
Amid his health crisis, Ahmad’s work quality deteriorated and was soon relieved of his job.
Frustrated Ahmad then went back to his native village in Amroha in Uttar Pradesh where he procured a country-made pistol and some cartridges.
“He first practised firing in his village, before returning to Delhi a few days ago,” said the DCP.
He first visited the restaurant on Thursday morning and asked his brother-in-law who owns the restaurant to sack Inayat. But his brother-in-law refused to yield his request.
“He was carrying his loaded pistol to the restaurant and had planned to kill Inayat if he failed to get him fired from the job. That is what eventually happened. Ahmad ended up picking a fight with Inayat. He later shot at him in the middle of the argument,” an investigator said.
Inayat was later rushed to a hospital, but couldn’t make it through the injury. Police said Ahmad had fled the crime scene as at then.
A police team soon launched a search party on Ahmad. Later, an informer told police on Friday about Ahmad’s plan to flee the city after getting some cash from a relative in Uttam Nagar. A police team laid a trap and soon got him arrested after a chase.
