The Honourable Minister of health, Prof Isaac Adewole on Tuesday in Abuja has addressed that the issue of maternal death can best be controlled with family planning practices. He had received a report presented to him by a Senior Researcher on Population, Dynamics and Reproductive health, African Population and Health Research Centre Mr Chima Izugbara.

Izugbara in the report stressed that child spacing and family planning helps reduce disease transmission from mother to child or even death of a mother. He said there is the need to look at education to address poverty and increase healthcare.

While deepening into the background of his study, Izugbara said maternal health care is a matter that needs urgent attention, adding that the plight of women will in a way affect the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.

In his report Izugbara further stated that over 53 percent of the population of Nigeria who lives in rural areas are especially at the risk of poor maternal health morbidity, adding that maternal health challenges of rural women are frightened by the urban bias in the location of health facilities and the availability of human resources for health.

Izugbara finally said in this report that, adequate funding is important for addressing the current shortage of high-quality human resources for maternal health at all skill level and increasing government investment in multi-sectoral funding will help to address the infrastructural deficiency that characterized the Nigerian health system.
