14-year-old Chinecherem Chinze, from Enugu State who works as a housemaid for a couple in Ondo State, was allegedly defiled by her master in the presence of his wife in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State.
She was sent to work with the couple as a maid when her widowed mother could not pay for her to write the Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination last year as the woman could not raise the exam fee.
Her master, Ene Chidozie, who hails from Abia state is an auto parts dealer, who allegedly impregnated Chinecherem, is said to be a native of Abia town in Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State. When contacted about the case, he said the case has been resolved between his family and the girl’s family.
He said that both his family and that of the pregnant 14-year-old girl had discussed extensively, and the latter had said they would call him anytime his attention was needed.
He said: “Both families have come together to settle the issue. Since we are far away, they agreed to contact me anytime they need my attention. Both myself and the lady’s family members are from Enugu State.” He added that the girl has since returned to her people in Enugu.
Betty Abah, a gender activist and Executive Director of Centre for Children’s Health, Education, Orientation and Protection (CEE-HOPE) have taken up the case and is interested in what the outcome will be like.
She explained that thousands of this case happens and that the case depicts sexual violence common amongst house helps and their masters.
She said: “Our law enforcement agencies really need to step up their games and ensure thorough punishment for this kind of case. This is sexual assault, this is sex with a minor and also threat, which are all punishable by law.
The wicked Madam and her randy husband must be told that there is a limit to impunity and that they can’t just treat anyone one, house helps or night in such dehumanising way. We will be watching to see what becomes of this case.”
