The Nigeria Customs Service claims to have started looking into the widely shared video that shows one of its agents extorting a N5,000 bribe from a traveller.

According to the NCS’s statement, an initial investigation found that the incident happened at the New Terminal in the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos’ departure hall and that the concerned passenger had recorded it on camera.

‘’The recording reveals an inappropriate request for ₦5000 in exchange for expeditious processing of customs procedures. We wish to confirm that the Officer implicated is indeed a member of the Nigeria Customs Service, properly assigned to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Area Command. The NCS strongly condemns this unprofessional conduct and is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of professionalism. A comprehensive investigation is underway to scrutinize the incident thoroughly, and appropriate actions will be taken. Such behavior is entirely inconsistent with the core values of our service, and we are resolute in maintaining a transparent and accountable customs operation.” the statement in part reads.

The organisation also stated that it supports the public’s and travellers’ prompt reporting of any misbehaviour or corruption. It claims that maintaining the integrity of its service and making sure that officers follow the strictest ethical guidelines depend on these reports. The NCS is steadfast in its dedication to promoting an accountable and transparent culture. The public will be informed as soon as possible of the investigation’s findings.
