Nigeria is Well Positioned to Become a Global Economic Hub- ICAN President

The 54th President of Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) Alhaji Rasak Adeleke Jaiyeola has disclosed that Nigeria is well positioned to become a global economic hub, noting that this can be achieved through accountability and transparency and the deployment of technology for effective leadership and good governance in the country.

He said this while delivering his keynote address at the 13th Western Zonal Conference hosted by Ikorodu District and Society of ICAN held at the Ikorodu Musical Village, under the theme “Fostering an Impactful Leadership through Accountability and Technology”

The President while calling on the government, corporate bodies and other stakeholders to leverage on the theme of the conference said that the Professional body was determined to improve public sector financial management at the three tiers of government, as he recounted two projects of the institute that have a direct bearing on the theme of the conference.

“Nigeria is no doubt at a crossroad. Interestingly, we are faced with both opportunities and challenges. Effective management of these two would be the difference between an inclusive growth and development or a country groping in the dark as to its growth and development aspirations. There is no gainsaying the fact that Nigeria is well positioned to become a global economic hub. There is the need for decisive steps and actions at exploiting the opportunities for us to becoming a prosperous nation”

“Allow me to briefly mention two developments in the Institute that have a direct bearing on the theme of the Conference. In October 2018, ICAN released the first report of its Accountability Index (ICAN AI). The ICAN-AI is an initiative for improving public sector financial management at the three tiers of government. The objectives of the ICAN AI among others include encouraging fiscal responsibility and good public finance management, tackling corruption by engaging quality professionals in the public sector and providing a holistic, objective and evidence-based framework for assessing the performance of Public sector entities.”

Meanwhile, the Zonal Chairman of the Institute Toluwase Ojo in his welcome speech said that the conference theme was carefully chosen after a serious brainstorm-sessions by the organizers and due consideration of the present need of the nation stressing that the matter of leadership cannot be overemphasized.

Prominent among the dignitaries that graced the conference were the Governor of Lagos State His Excellence Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, the Royal fathers of Ikorodu Land , Ayangbunre of Ikorodu HRM Oba Engr, Abdul Kabir Adewale Shotobi (Adegorushen V), Ranodu of Imota Kingdom HRM Oba Mudashiru Ajibade Bakare-Agoro FCA, and other professional members of the Institute from within the South-west region of Nigeria.
